Frequently Asked Questions

• What type of bike should I use?

  You don’t need a gravel-specific bike, although it is probably the best choice for this type of riding. A hardtail mountain bike will also work. The reality is that the tires you use are the most important factor. We recommend an average tire width of 40-42mm.

• Can I ride an ebike?

  Only on the 20 km family fun route. Pedal Assist bikes are permitted as long as they are a class one bike that relies on pedalling to move forward and does not have a throttle.

• How would you describe the course?

  This is Canadian Shield country, which means rolling hills, some short punchy climbs, and winding roads around lakes, ponds, wetlands, and rock outcrops. Expect some NWM roads, a section of the K&P rail trail, a bit of single track and some pavement. This area really offers the best gravel riding in Eastern Ontario.

• Will we all start at once?

  No. Start times will be staggered based on the length of the route you choose to ride:

  • Approximately 105 km @ 10:00 a.m.
  • Approximately 65 km @ 10:30 a.m.
  • Approximately 20 km @ 11:00 a.m.

• Are there any support stations on the course?

  Yes. You will find a few refuelling stations along the course with water, fruit and other items.

• What does my registration fee include?

  • Curated, mapped, and marked route
  • Refueling stations
  • Commemorative T-shirt
  • Post-ride meal, with non-alcoholic drink
  • Music at start and finish

• Will the course be marked?

  Yes, the course will be marked. Since it’s easy to miss a sign along the route, we strongly encourage you to download the route maps and use your cycling computer or phone. The GPX file includes turn-by-turn navigation. 

• If I have a mechanical problem on the course or I need first aid, what are my options?

  This is a self-supported ride. This means you should be prepared to bring the tools you think you’ll need for basic repairs. 

  For serious injury, please call emergency services.

• Besides my bike and helmet, what else should I bring?

  Fuel for the ride.

• I registered and paid, but now I can’t make the ride. What are my options?

  There will be no refunds, but you can transfer your registration to another rider. Just email the event organizer to make the name change at admin@tourismwestport.ca.

• I’d love to come early and stay in or around Westport. What are my accommodation options?

  Westport offers a variety of accommodation options, including an inn, bed and breakfasts, Airbnbs, and a motel. But if you are looking for something a little closer to nature, there are many campgrounds nearby where you can pitch your tent and enjoy the great outdoors, cottage rentals, and a unique glamping option. But book soon, accommodations in the village and the surrounding area tend to go fast.

• What about the weather?

  The average temperature in early October in this area is 15° C. Perfect for riding!

  However, this is also a time of seasonal transition, so the weather can be unpredictable. Dress appropriately. This is a rain or shine event.

• Are there other rides in the area that you would recommend?

  Yes! Check out the The Kick & Push Century ride in Central Frontenac on July 19, which features a 100 km ride consisting of two 50 km loops. And the Wolfe Island Gravel Grinder on Wolfe Island on September 26, which features 40 km and 75 km grinds.
